What do we See
o
What is really Happening
o
How does it relate to Our lives?
o
Why does this situation Exist?
o
(What can we Do about it?) ---> A topic we're saving for later.
Clearly, acronyms don't usually translate well in other languages, and our questions really looked something like this.
o ¿Qué es lo que Vemos
o Lo que realmente Sucede
o ¿Cómo se relaciona esto con Nuestras vidas?
o ¿Por qué se debe esta situación existe?
I guess the acronym ended up to be VSNP...closer to a wacky Myers Brigg's personality type than a snazzy acronym. But the truth is a lot can be lost in translation here and we just work with it. Like our conversations today. One aspect of learning a new language that I have appreciated has been that in order to communicate with another person, everything verbal needs to be slower and simpler, and everything nonverbal needs to noticed and used. It could be hand motions, or reading a person's face, tone of voice, body posture, expression, eye contact, etc. These things sometimes seem to get masked by wordy conversations that dominate how and what we interpret. The experience of not sharing the same language is without a doubt incredibly frustrating and feels limiting at times, but it also causes you to be more sensitive to what people are saying in other forms. Similarly, the beauty of this project is that the kids get a chance to express what they're thinking, not only verbally and with writing, but also aided visually.
Responding to the question "What are the things most important to you in your life?" here were some of our favorites. As you might notice, there were some common trends found in their photos and responses Family is clearly very important, as is the cultural significance of corn and traditional forms of cooking. Other things repeatedly came up as well, such as working hard, learning from grandparents, dignity even in poverty, and humility.

Personas Humildes
"Esta fotografía es de son dos personas que fueron a la montana a traer leña
para cocinar sus alimentos. Esta foto es importante para mi porque
estas personas son humildes y que luchan dia a dia para poder sobrevivir

Humble People
"This
photograph is of two people who went to the mountain to bring firewood
back to cook their food. This photo is important because these people
are humble and struggle daily to survive and make a decent living because in each household there are different problems and maybe they have an economic problem that affects them as a family or a community. It's important because they are teaching humility to others."
My Grandfather.
"He is the father of my mother and always comes to our home. He was husking corn because he was helping us to pluck corn and because he knows and is bigger than us. Sometimes he tells us stories and events of his life or what happened over time and as the times changed before or he tells us tales of La Llorona ("The Wailer," A story from Mexico), or of "Tio Conejo" ("Uncle Rabbit," a children's tale from Nicaragua) or tells jokes but he is important in my life because it is very good to us and never gets angry for an act that has a solution and is cheerful."

Work done in the Corn.
"This
photograph is of my Grandpa working, collecting corn in the field that
is already dry. This picture is important for me because it's my
Grandpa who taught us how to work and take care of the corn so that we
have tamales or tortillas to eat and can nourish ourselves well. Also,
it's important because others can learn and we won't lose our culture of
planting corn and beans."

Trabajando alegre.
"Esta foto es de dos personas trabajando en San
Martin, muy felices. Esta foto es importante para mi porque yo veo que

malas ponen a trabajar para llevar dinero a su casa."
Working cheerfully.
"This picture is of two people working in San Martin, very happy. This photo is important to me because I see that these two people work very hard for people who come to visit so that these people see the effort they make so that everything is beautiful. It is also important to me because they do this work rather than do bad things to bring money home.
