This being our final week of Photovoice sessions we moved
into our ultimate topic: Change. If I
have learned anything during my time in Guatemala, it is that change of any
kind, is often expected (or at least desired) to be fast but is almost always a slow process - especially sustainable, positive forms of change. As our Photovoice group discussed this week, change could be needed in
things as broad and big as things related to policy, the way an organization functions,
or the resources a community is lacking. It can also be needed for things as specific as the dynamics within a
family, communication in a relationship, or bad habits we hold on to. Whatever it is, it often takes time to understand
and identify what should and can be changed, as well as how to best go about making those
improvements. With the community of Llanos de Pinal we started this process by simply asking these youth what could be better than it presently is.
This is where we began last week, and today the group brought back
pictures of things they want to change or improve within their community. Even at 11 and 12 years old they identified big
changes like improvements to their streets, the cleanliness of their
environment, the use of uncompleted buildings and the capacity of their health
clinic. Take a peek at their work below.
La Basura en el Bosque (The trash in the forest) -Erik
The Trash in the Forest
"This photograph is of the garbage in the forest (on the mountain). This photograph reveals to us how people are polluting the environment, the garbage that is in this picture is very bad because it pollutes and killed many plants and animals. This picture is important because I want everyone to live in a clean environment and with litter so that we not hurt the earth and ourselves also we should not throw trash on the street. "Do not pollute, recycles your trash for your health and others!" Solution: Use garbage cans and that are labeled and then we can recycle and use labels that say "Do not litter."
Centro de Salud / Health Center (Photo by Veronica)
Health Center
“This photo is from the health center. It is a very small health center, and there is not medicine for the patients who arrive. This health center is filled, and gives good attention but there aren’t staff members there every day – the Doctor comes on Tuesdays but there is no medicine. We could ask the government for money to buy medicine and bring in more staff.”

Streets in Poor Condition"This photo is of a broken street. It’s important to me because nobody does anything to fix the streets and the streets are in poor condition because there is a river that goes through when it rains and the people don’t say anything or do anything to fix the streets in my community. People could work together to fix the streets and we could seek help from the government to fix the streets."
Casa sin Terminar / Unfinished House (Photo by Norma)
Unfinished House.
"This picture is important for me
because they did not finish it. My mom
told that there would have been a clinic but they stopped building it a long
time ago, and so I still think they should return to building it again and I
would be happy to have in my community another health center and also it’s
necessary because if anything that’s an emergency we have several centers where
we can go. Hopefully my dreams will come true."
Streets of Dirt and
Dust
This photograph is of a dirt road of dust and rocks, where
we walk and it’s very difficult to go on in bus because there are a lot of
rocks. This picture is important because
I want to change the future of my community and so that we can all have buses
to transport and also have drains so that my community can change and be more
productive and no just have streets of dirt.
Improvement is the first step and all we need is to improve productivity
and start with ourselves. Solution: Talking with the government and they can help
us to improve our streets so that everyone can live better in the community.
This photo is of a polluted street, which is why I want the
street in our community to be clean and not be trashed with so much pollution. This photograph is very important to me
because the street is contaminated because so many people throw so much trash
in the street and I want to clean the street and I want the community to no
longer cause so much pollution and for this reason it’s very important to
me. And for that, I want to change the
future of my community and I want there to be no more trash in the street of my
community and for someone to place a dumpster or trash cans in the community so
there isn’t so much pollution in the street.
The Trash in my
Community
This photograph is of trash in my community, and while it’s
not much it really does affect us. This
photo is important to me because it is of the polluting of the environment
while there are people who live in the community. I want there to not be anymore garbage
because it’s harmful and can cause us to become sick. Those who live in this community could
collect the garbage and thus have a more clean and beautiful community.
